Theodore Shapiro, M.D.: an Appreciation

Arnold M. Cooper, M.D.

THE OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF a professional and scientific organization may be the best and most reliable indicator of the health of the profession. At its best, a journal manifests the ideals of the profession, fosters the dissemination and exchange of scientific ideas and data, and stimulates advances in clinical practice. A scientific and clinical journal is simultaneously a resource for scholars and researchers and an inspiration for the clinician, helping to enrich his daily work. It is clear that the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association more than meets these criteria, and it sets a standard for excellence among scholarly journals.

While the superior quality of the Journal surely reflects the intellectual depth and vigor of American psychoanalysis, it also is a tribute to the qualities of its editor. We have been extraordinarily fortunate in having Theodore Shapiro as Editor for the past decade. He is a man of capacious intellect, boundless scientific curiosity, and refined discernment for sorting out the interesting innovations from the merely different. He is deeply devoted to psychoanalysis, but otherwise remarkably free of ideology. His profound dedication to psychoanalysis and his utter scientific integrity combine firmness with fairness and the desire to learn new things.

The editorship of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association is one of the most important positions in the psychoanalytic universe. Dr. Shapiro is the third person who has held this post and, like each of the editors before him, his unique talents and skills have shaped the Journal and, one might say, have helped to shape contemporary psychoanalysis. Dr. Shapiro is the author of almost 150 papers, roughly half of them written during the ten years of his editorship.
