Case vignettes are used to exemplify the divergences in development of congenitally blind infants. A central problem in the infant-mother relationship is the mother's wish for the child to be active, as seeing children are, whereas the infant tends to be immobile in order to maximize information-gathering through hearing. Mobility restriction remains a major problem to be understood and worked with throughout the blind child's development. This is related to the prolonged dependency of the blind child on the seeing child and adult.
