Death of a Six-Year-Old's Mother During his Analysis

Billy was just past six when he began his analysis. Two weeks later his mother had a recurrence of the malignancy which had necessitated a radical mastectomy the year before. Her disease ran an extremely rapid course, and she died within three and a half months.

This report covers the first seven months of Billy's analysis and is intended to focus on the technical problems raised by the unfolding of this tragedy. The material will be presented chronologically, the problems discussed at the points at which they arose. The work of the three months after the mother's death is included to follow Billy into the beginning of his mourning.

Billy first came to the Hanna Perkins School (A. Katan, 1959) at age four and a half because of persistent enuresis, finger sucking, and teasing his brothers five and seven years older.
