The Candidates Association

A. Stanley Kaye, M.D.

For the first time in the history of the Candidates Association the question of where to hold our meetings no longer constituted a problem. Through the kind offices of Mr. Herman Rikelman, Executive Director of the Karen Horney Clinic, and the Medical Board, the spacious auditorium of the new Clinic building was made available to us. We followed the principle enunciated by Past President Dr. Ellis Mischel that meetings be held on Saturday nights together with our spouses, thus obviating the oft-heard and not unjustified complaint of, “What! Another night away from home!”

In all a total of five meetings was held and many interesting matters were covered. The business aspects of the Association were handled by the officers meeting as the Executive Committee. As in previous years, a contribution of $ 150 was made to the Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis for the annual Karen Horney Lecture. News was ably disseminated by our Secretary, Dr. Irving Friedman, in the Newsletter. This included the minutes of the preceding meeting as well as other pertinent information.

The “social” meetings included a wine-tasting party, an excellent color film on skiing, a very well prepared film on Group Therapy presented by Dr. Louis DeRosis and his colleague Dr. Richard Abell, and a discussion of the very trying problem presented by the Internal Revenue Service ruling that moneys spent by candidates for psychoanalysis were not income-tax-deductible. Enjoyable collations followed each meeting. This was made possible by the increase in dues in effect since last year.

Thanks are due to Drs. Friedman and Henry Horowitz for the very efficient way in which they conducted the business and the meetings of the Association during the absence of the President due to illness. As in previous years the last meeting was held on June 16th at Stony Lodge in the form of our annual picnic. Though the water was chilly, the weather was fine and a good time was had by all. In closing let me wish the new President, Dr. Irving Friedman, every success for the coming year.
