Russian Doll

Gill Denne

Glittering matriarch,

tearless smile

perfectly applied.

Cracked and broken,

her created multitude

stares back.

Formed for others

(and for her)

this magic trick

of Safety.

Protection

where none exists.

She stands

empty

insubstantial

hollow

as layer on layer

her Stories emerge:

Dragons and Demons

The Princess Imprisoned

And Time Ticking On

Wide-eyed

(Dead eyed)

Sleepless

Unblinking

Each,

prisoner to those before,

carries

Terror

and

deep inside

ever evasive,

the hope of rescue

Meticulously hidden,

separate

but not alone

I lay her stories across my bed,

and search for meaning.

Simplicity evolves

On the tiniest

a rose blooms

unbroken
