Poetry

In Montparnasse Cemetery with David

Valerie Sinason

(1)

I nearly lost you

Looking for Dreyfus

You were with Baudelaire

and les fleurs de mal

rise above the elegant

avenues of the dead

Smiling tourists stroll with maps

Gardeners and Security Guards

Tend the great calm

(2)

I nearly lost you

Looking for Dreyfus

Where is Dreyfus?

It is getting late

And I must find him

There are yellow stars in the sky

Died 1935

Only 4 more years

And he would have died again

(3)

Where is Dreyfus?

And my question tries

to hide her urgency

Her shabby clothes

and secret language

But you found Seberg, De Beauvoir

and Jean Paul Sartre

Your long English stride

found the compass, the maps, the statues, the graves

“Petain's here, so Dreyfus isn't far” you said

Elegant in your Esperanto

Your camera twinkling on Man Ray and Maupassant

Brancusi and Beckett

(4)

Petain and Drefus …

Oh Capitaine, mon capitaine,

Losing uniform

Losing form

Losing spirit …

(5)

Zola's J'Accuse

Rustles the leaves

breathes me towards you

You hold out your hand

Finding me Finding Dreyfus

(6)

I place a stone on the grave

And stay there

Dreyfus died 1935

Just another 4 years …

Tourists pass on

Mort aux juifs

Fearful mourners hover near

No smile or sign of recognition

(7)

But your hand in mine

heals tribal scars

And on we walk through

the city of the dead

My Question in her proud new coat

Raising her head

Opening her eyes

Like a tourist

Alive in Montparnasse

My love and I

Lost and Found in Dreyfus
