I attended a trauma conference by Bessel van der Kolk nearly a decade ago, which led to me undertake somatic trauma training as I realised that nearly everyone coming to therapy is initially in need of help to stabilise and regulate their emotional state, before working through, integrating, and processing memories. Van der Kolk brings vast life experience and years of clinical experience to this clearly written book covering many approaches to working with trauma. It will be of interest to general and specialist readers, including psychologists, counsellors, social workers, and medical staff.

In The Body Keeps the Score, Van der Kolk helps us to gain an understanding of traumatic stress, showing us how it rearranges the brain's wiring, describing how areas such as attachment, pleasure, and trust can be reactivated by neurofeedback, mindfulness skills, play, and yoga. This book offers alternatives to medication and talk therapy.

Trauma happens to all of us, one does not have to be a soldier or refugee to be affected.
