Tara: Not by the Book

Robert U. Akeret

This article explores the way a patient taught an analyst a lesson he would never forget. Working with a brilliant but troubled patient is intensely stressful and challenging. The patient featured in this article had been previously hospitalised twice after suicide attempts. The analyst provides a detailed account of the therapeutic relationship as it evolves and eventually supports attachment repair. A corrective emotional experience results from the analyst intuiting the need to act “outside the box”.
