Ballad of a Fairy Tale Life: (For My Father)

Joy Stone

I wailed for you but you did not come.

And the monsters, the giants,

The hobgoblins, the ogres,

The wicked stepmothers

And all the nightmare figures

Never left me—

You did not fight them off.

You were not there.

And the brambles that snagged me

And the living-trees that grabbed me

And the charming creatures that tricked me

And the cruel, cruel weather

And the holes that opened up

And the traps that ensnared me

And the towers that imprisoned me

And the moats I could never cross

And the drawbridges I could not call down

And the sanctuaries I could not enter …

You were not there.
