Daughter of My Mother's Heart

Deirdre Kramer

Daughter of my mother's heart,

cold and icy, steel eyes impart

stares that freeze,

and tongue that uses words for darts.

Daughter of my mother's rage,

uneasy passions fill her cage;

its steel bars taut but bent with age;

daughter of a woman caged.

Daughter of my mother's tears,

cries that jolt and wounds that sear;

moans that fade with passing years;

daughter echoes mother's tears.

Daughter of my mother's scars,

wounds hid deep beneath the tar;

to unearth these mysteries of hers,

daughter travels wide and far.

Daughter scythed and daughter scathed,

daughter wrapped around the blade.

Daughter follow, daughter come

echo mommy's unheard moan.

Daughter razed and daughter sheared,

daughter veiled beneath the tears.

Waves rush up against her pier,

eroding what strength once was there.

Daughter travels wide and far,

wrapped in mother's mournful shroud.

She journeys endlessly alone,

hoping a plaintiff voice will call her home.
