The Autonomous Self: The Work of John D. Sutherland. Edited by Jill Savege Scharff. Northvale, NJ: Aronson, 1994, 480 pp., $50.00.

Review by:
Gregorio Kohon

For many years, he dedicated his writings to promulgate the work of his British colleagues: Balint, Guntrip, and Winnicott, and especially that of his analyst and later his friend, Ronald Fairbairn. This task culminated in 1989, when Sutherland published Fairbairn's Journey into the Interior, an accomplished psychoanalytic psychobiography.

Now Jill Savege Scharff—who trained as Sutherland's psychiatry trainee in community psychiatry in Edinburgh and was supervised by him in her individual cases—has edited this collection of his papers. It should be warmly received by the international psychoanalytic community.

Jock Sutherland's work reflected the scope of his vision: he was not only concerned with individual health and psychopathology, but also wished to extend psychoanalytic insights to the functioning of small groups, institutions, and society in general. His interests are well illustrated in the four parts in which the papers have been grouped: Part I, Object-relations Theory; Part II, Group Relations; Part III, Community Mental Health; and Part IV, The Self.
