Psychoanalytic Technique And The Creation Of Analytic Patients. By Arnold Rothstein. Madison, CT: International Universities Press, 1995, xvii + 137 pp., $27.50.

Review by:
George H. Allison

In this slim volume Arnold Rothstein delineates, explains, and illustrates a fundamentally new paradigm for psychoanalysts to utilize in the development of their practices. He states in the introduction that “for more than a quarter century” he has been reflecting on how to enable analysts to recommend and undertake analysis as the treatment of choice. The impetus for the papers collected here clearly derives from increasing concern about the decline in analytic practices in this country. Rothstein's close involvement with efforts to promote psychoanalytic practice and his own successful experiences as a practicing analyst are fruitfully depicted in this bold, candid, and lucid presentation.
