The last review of psychiatry textbooks to appear in this journal was a 1988 piece by Asch and Marcus; their aim was to evaluate psychoanalytic teaching in United States medical colleges. The authors presented an overview of problems that confront the teaching of psychoanalytic concepts to medical students. Now, nearly a decade later, another look at psychiatric texts is in order, but for reasons that did not exist then. The mid-1990s brought questions that seemed inconceivable to psychiatric educators a generation ago.
