Traumatic Stress: The Effects of Overwhelming Experience on Mind, Body, and Society. Edited by Bessel A. Van der Kolk, Alexander C. McFarlane, and Lars Weisaeth. New York: Guilford Press, 1996, 596 pp., $55.00

Review by:
Glen O. Gabbard

During the many years when psychoanalysts paid insufficient attention to the traumatic origins of the difficulties in their patients, a body of empirical and clinical literature was accumulating. This edited volume provides analysts a comprehensive overview of that literature and an excellent update. Among the topics covered are adaptations to trauma; the relation between trauma and memory; dissociation; legal issues stemming from posttraumatic stress disorder; developmental issues in childhood and adolescence related to trauma; and the full range of treatments. In addition to an excellent chapter by Jacob Lindy on the psychoanalytic psychotherapy of posttraumatic stress disorder, the reader is given chapters on psychopharmacological treatments, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and acute crisis intervention measures.
