Oltre L'Ombra: Donne Intorno a Jung: Nadia Neri. Rome: Borla, 1995, 199 pp.

Review by:
Giovanna Ambrosio

Nadia Neri, analytic psychologist and full member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology and of the Associazione Italiana Psicologia Analitica, writes about the emblematic female figures involved in the founding of Jungian analytic psychology. The author's purpose is to bring out of grey anonymity those women analysts who worked with Jung from the first decade of this century and who, through their wealth of intellect and their scholarly qualities, contributed to the construction of the principles of Jungian psychology and to the enrichment of Jung's theoretical speculations.

Neri explains that she has not written a specific chapter about Sabina Spielrein because she is the only significant woman in Jung's life who has already “come out of the shadows,” thanks to the numerous studies published about her work. Neri's research is spread over ten chapters, eight of which illustrate the personalities and the human and intellectual events in the lives of eight women analysts. One chapter is about the Zurich Club; the last is on Olga Frobe Kapteyen, founder of “Eranos”—the intimate circle of intellectuals representative of the cultural upheaval in Central Europe at that time.
