Developing a Consultative Model Using Videotape to Support Institutional Caregivers Worldwide

This ongoing project is developing a consultation model using videotape to develop recommendations to caregivers in institutions in remote locations and in different cultures. Applications of the Lausanne Triadic Play Model (Fivaz-Depeursinge and Corboz-Warnery 1999) and videotape microanalysis (Downing 2001) are used to make observations of infant-caregiver and peer interactions in response to caregivers' consultation questions. These observations generate ideas for suggestions to caregivers. Videotape is then used in follow-up of the consultation issues. The presentation will include (1) a rationale for using videotape in this consultation; (2) a description of an exploratory consultation to an orphanage in El Salvador (Phase 1); (3) a discussion of the evolving consultative process (Phase 2); (4) an example of a school consultation (Phase 3); and (5) the process of developing a general model from the consultation experience. Examples of the written reports from Phase 1, 2, and 3 of the consultation and illustrations of videotape follow-ups will be given.

In the first half of the last century, analytic thinkers (e.g., Dorothy Burlingham and Anna Freud, John Bowlby, René Spitz) did pioneering work in child development and psychotherapy using direct observation of children in institutions.
