Events in the Psychoanalytic World

New York

The plan for establishing psychoanalytic training facilities at the Long Island Medical School has been completed. Dr. Sandor Lorand, who is director of this psychoanalytic program, informs us that activities will go into full swing this Fall. It might be of interest, Dr. Lorand points out, to note that the Long Island Medical School has been established as a State Medical School by New York.

Dr. M. Ralph Kaufman, President of our Association, will head a mission to Israel in September to survey the mental health problems of that country. He is going at the invitation of the Ministry of Health of the State of Israel. The other members of the mission will be Dr. Dale C. Cameron, Acting Director of the National Institute for Mental Health of the United States Public Health Service, and Dr. Paul Friedman of New York.

This project has grown out of the work of the American Committee on Mental Health in Israel, sponsored by the American Fund for Israel Institutions. The American Committee, of which Dr. Kaufman is Chairman and Dr. Friedman Co-Chairman, was organized to assist in formulating a mental health program following a request for cooperation and assistance from the Ministry of Health of Israel. Upon the return of the mission, the Committee hopes to call on American psychiatrists to aid in implementing the program based on the needs and resources found in Israel.

We have just been informed that the New York Psychoanalytic Institute has been given a grant by the U. S. Public Health Service of $11,500. This money is to go towards the establishing of a position as Assistant to the Educational Committee to facilitate the complex work of that Committee.
