Sue Whitmore

‘Somewhere’ I said, 'up on the side

Of this vast mountain

I lost something

And was unable to continue my journey.

I may be able to recognise the place

When I get there.

Will you be my guide?

I'll pay you what I can;

You will know the dangers

When alone I would have to turn back’.

And we began to climb,

Slowly at first and in the shade,

Being so far under the mountain

That the sun hardly ever reached us.

A confusion of dense undergrowth

And then the contours of the land

Obscured any perspective.

Always it seemed another peak appeared

That, when scaled,

Led only to another

‘How shall we know how far we have come

And how much further there is yet to go?

How do you know we are going the right way?

Oh, I can't go on' I wailed.

But, quite firmly you helped me,

Up sheer faces, round perilous overhangs

And across crumbling treacherous rocks;

And gradually I sensed where I was

And realised that we were closing in

On the place of the disaster.

We came to a huge fissure in the rocks;

I found the lifeless bodies

Of the children

For whom there had been no hope.

I faced the anguish of the scene,

Screamed again and wept,

Identifying myself amongst the dead.

Together we dug trenches

And cleared the face of the mountain

Of what was no longer relevant.
