In this brief and personal appreciation, I have conveyed what seems to me a surprising diffidence in Isabel's assessment of her work. I have speculated that this reticence resulted in some small - but nevertheless quite significant - divergence from Elliott Jaques' original work, with which Isabel's is always closely linked. This divergence has relevance for Jaques' abandonment of the ‘social defence system’ theory, and Isabel's continuing allegiance to it.
