Douglas Haldane MBE (1926-2012)

An Appreciation by Una McCluskey and An Appreciation by Christopher Clulow, Ph.D.

Douglas Haldane, who has died aged eighty-six, was a pioneering child and family psychiatrist whose influence extended well beyond his native Scotland. His modest and collegiate manner, combined with a breadth of vision and determined purpose, enabled him to introduce organisational and service changes that others would have found difficult. A gifted clinician, educator, and supporter of colleagues, he endeared himself to those who knew and worked with him.

Born in Annan, Dumfriesshire, he was educated locally before attending Dumbarton and Dumfries Academies. He went to Edinburgh University in 1943, graduating in 1948 with MB ChB, and as one of the first doctors to qualify following the inception of the National Health Service. He took up a range of positions following qualification, including stints as an obstetrics house surgeon at Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion in Edinburgh and Cresswell Maternity Hospital in Dumfries, before his two years' national service as a surgeon lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
