A Mind of its Own

Robert Monzo

It can’t happen more quickly or gently

Can’t cushion the snap of the bone

It’s beyond the senses without the pretences

For grief has a mind of its own

Can’t balance the glimpses of heartwarmth and winces

Or waken the smiles and the stones

The world is an alien I take to a sail

In the grief with a wind of its own

The empty is closer Making the most

for the rest is not simple to do

The terror is clearer fear constantly nearer

with thoughts of the fading of you

My searching more frantic no signs of Atlantic

no contact with comforts of home

No blessing or lessening no camouflage dressing

of grief in a robe of its own

No shape or depiction no form or prediction

Ghost images all without tone

Scream agony Armoury

is no protection from grief

with a thrust of its own

Steers clear of direction

ideas of reflection

Soft feathers are lost with a groan

Yet time glimpses survival

bright life and revival

For love has a heart of its own
