Gottfriede Aufreiter 1915-2003
Review by: James Naiman
Born in Vienna on November 2, 1915, Gottfriede Aufreiter (known to her friends as Friedl) was the last surviving member of the group (consisting of Scott, her husband, and herself) who initiated psychoanalytic training in Canada at the Allan Memorial Institute in 1955. She had the rank of assistant professor of psychiatry.
My first contact with Friedl was when she interviewed me for acceptance into training. I do not think she was satisfied with all my answers but she accepted me nonetheless. Later on she supervised my second control case. She was a superb clinician and a teacher who had the unusual talent of making complicated matters seem simple. She was a dedicated psychoanalyst who practised what she preached, working part-time out of her home on Sunnyside to be available to her children. Invited to speak to a women's group and asked what they should be doing, she annoyed some of them by telling them to spend more time with their families.
In 1971, Friedl and her husband, who had recovered from a heart attack, moved to London (Ontario) where Johann worked at the university and, until recently, she practised psychoanalysis. She died on May 18, 2003-2 years following her husband, leaving behind three daughters and four grandchildren. I was sadly informed of her death by her daughter Nora, who had been a friend to my youngest daughter at the school they both attended.
Friedl Aufreiter lives on in the minds and hearts of those she analyzed and supervised.
