Sullivan and Treatment

Mary Julian White, M.D.

I am indebted to Dr. Dexter Bullard and Dr. Otto Will, editor, for quotations from Dr. Sullivan's Chestnut Lodge talks; to Dr. Robert Kvarnes for material from his recorded case seminar; to the Washington School of Psychiatry and Dr. Otto Will, editor, for excerpts from the "Psychiatric Interview" lectures; to Dr. Janet Rioch for her notes on technique; and to the following colleagues who gave liberally of their time and recollections: Drs. Dexter Bullard, Rex Buxton, Mabel Cohen, Robert Cohen, Ralph Crowley, Edna Dyar, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, Thomas Harris, Robert Kvarnes, Eugene Meyer, Douglas Noble, Edward Ohaneson, Jane Pearce, David Rioch, Janet Rioch, Alfred Stanton, Herbert Staveren, Clara Thompson, Philip Wagner, Edith Weigert, Mabel Wilkin, and Otto Will.—Mary J. White.

ON THE MASTER'S WALL at Rugby is an inscription which reads, "This stone commemorates the exploit of William Webb Ellis who, with a fine disregard of the rules of football as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the Rugby game. A.D. 1823." It was Sullivan's "fine disregard" of the rules of classical psychoanalysis that led to his signal contribution, his capacity to see his way through to one operational statement that covered so vast an area. His insistence on viewing psychopathology as arising out of and living on in the field of interpersonal relations was an enormously useful step.
