Sartre and Psychoanalysis—Introduction

Murray Krim, Ph.D.

LET ME WELCOME YOU TO this morning's presentation and panel. The topic is Sartre and Psychoanalysis: What We Can Learn from a Lover's Quarrel. Our principle speaker is Dr. Jarl Dyrud and discussing his paper will be Drs. Gerard Chrzanowski, Lawrence Friedman and Stephen Mitchell.

Dr. Dyrud is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Chicago. He is the author of numerous articles and has had a very long history with the interpersonal movement. In 1947 he was at Chestnut Lodge where all of the work was influenced by Sullivan, and Fromm-Reichmann. Dr. Dyrud was supervised by Harry Stack Sullivan. He then went to the University of Chicago where he is now a full professor. He teaches, writes and is also in private practice. He delivered a paper at the Institute a few years ago called, "Remembrance of Things Past, " and he has written a classic paper on narcissism for one of the Fromm-Reichmann memorial lectures. Dr. Dyrud committed himself to do this paper on Sartre about a year ago. I think he knew something then that in some mysterious way the rest of us didn't quite know. And that is, that there would be a current interest in Sartre. For example, within the next few days, there will appear an issue of, The Review of Existential Psychology and Psychiatry, almost entirely devoted to psychoanalysis and Sartre. I tried to get a pirated copy to look at it so that I would be sort of one up on the panelists here, but unfortunately I was unable to do so. So I'll just take my place with the others.
