Freud, Sartre and Sullivan: Three Great Minds in Search of a Psychoanalytic Construct

Gerard Chrzanowski, M.D.

TODAY'S DISCUSSION IS BASED predominantly on a sense of titillation with the title of Dr. Dyrud's paper. What I have to say centers around association to that title and to a very rough first draft of his paper. The actual manuscript arrived when I had already completed my soliloquy.

My frame of reference includes two of my own essays, i.e., "Volition and change" and "Dependency and reliance" (1977), (1978), Sartre's published statements on psychoanalysis (1966), (1974), a rereading of Dr. Dyrud's paper "Narcissus and nemesis" (1983), and looking into Grinspoon's "New issues in psychoanalysis" (1983). At the end I came up with more material than I could possibly fit into the time allotted to me. So, I decided to concern myself with the search of three great minds for a viable psychoanalytic construct, one which was capable of advancing knowledge.

This odd trio consists of Freud, Sartre, and Sullivan. Each to varying degrees, made a particular contribution toward that goal.
