A brief history of my tears

This paper was first presented on 24 March 1990 at a conference called ‘Becoming a Therapist’, sponsored by the California Institute for Clinical Social Work in Los Angeles. Participants were invited to trace the origins of their choice of profession and their subsequent development within it. In several instances I used the presence of a live audience to underscore particular points. Consequently, I have left the paper in the form of a lecture with only a few editorial changes.
