Between the appearance of the last hard copy issue of Free Associations (no. 60, 2004) and its re-launch in 2010 under the editorship of Caroline Bainbridge and Candida Yates, I made an effort to keep the journal going by publishing articles on the psychoanalysis-and-therapy website.
There are 61 items, ranging from articles and reviews to dissertations, books and reprints of articles that originally appeared elsewhere and some that had appeared earlier in Free Associations that I was particularly proud of publishing. The precise dates when the individual items appeared in this format did not seem important at the time and most are lost in the mists of time. The new editor and I believe that all the pieces should appear in the new electronic version of the journal, thereby ensuring that they will reach a wider audience by being included in the Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing archive.

Charles Sharpe has worked for decades in residential child care in the UK. His training and experience in this area are combined with training and study in psychoanalytic theory, and he is currently training to be a psychodynamic counsellor and therapist. He brings his extensive knowledge and experience to bear on a volume of essays on therapeutic communities for children and young people, which he subjects to an extensive and measured critique.
