PEP-Web Tip of the Day

After you perform a search, you can sort the articles by Source. This will rearrange the results of your search, displaying articles according to their appearance in journals and books. This feature is useful for tracing psychoanalytic concepts in a specific psychoanalytic tradition.

Kurt Jacobsen and Robert M. Young

Our latest issue, on ‘psychoanalysis and aesthetics’ is guest edited by Carolyn Laubender and Valerie Oved Giovanini, whom we warmly welcome. We encourage others to follow their capable lead with proposals for future theme issues. All such ventures are conducted with editorial autonomy for the venturesome guests, even if we abiding coeditors occasionally should scratch our heads or even blanch over certain aspects of accompanying argument.

We could not agree more with the criticism that “psychoanalytic interpretation at the level of plot, character, or symbol all too often remains insensible to the constitutive role that history, politics, or form plays in the creation and recognition of any aesthetic object.” We do raise eyebrows, for example, at the characterization of” the anachronistic bifurcation of “art/politics” that has characterized much Frankfurt School work and, consequently, much critical theory.” Still, challenges to theories of all kinds are always productive in the end, whichever way they go. Ah, but don't get us started on the fraught question of the value of psychobiography.

Anyway, we return to the usual inspired miscellany in the next issue.
