Interdisciplinary Education Committee (IEC)

Eric Essman, M.A.

As this issue of fort da was going to press, the Interdisciplinary Education Committee — which includes Martine Aniel, Janet Thormann Mackintosh, Simone Perez, and Sharon Bass — was finalizing plans for its October 28, 2006, conference, “Unveiled: Shame, Identity, Gender, and Iranian Cinema.” The conference features talks by Joan Copjec (SUNY-Buffalo), Negar Mottahedeh (Duke) and Mali Mann. (SFPI&S), along with a screening of Abbas Kiarostami's Ten (2002). As well as promoting the general aim of IEC to provide a forum for dialogue among psychoanalysis, researchers in other fields, and the arts, the Committee planned that the conference complement this year's Intensive Study Group program on gender and sexuality.

I'd like to thank former committee members Celeste Schneider, Kristen Carey, and Scott Manus for their ideas earlier this year and last; Anca Ivan for her beautiful and insightful art work on the “Unveiled” brochure; and members of the Iranian diaspora community who supported our program — among them, Parisa Farvid, who modeled for the brochure; and in particular, Persis Karim, Professor of Comparative Literature at San Jose State, who provided editorial suggestions and whose volume, Let Me Tell You Where I've BeenNew Writing by Women of the Iranian Diaspora, was an inspiration to our efforts.
