For a few minutes, I toyed with the idea of taking the titles of Harvey's more than 60 published works, written over half a century, and turning them into a short story. This was hubris. The scope of Harvey's work refuses to be lassoed.

As an adult developmentalist — nearly 50 years ago — he was already inquiring about the relationship between somatic function, the length of menses, and ego functioning.

In 1969, he was already presaging the challenges of immigrants by examining sex-role strain and personality adjustment on China-born students in America.

More than 20 years ago, he published papers on adult development when mainstream psychoanalysis was still thinking that our fate was sealed at the Oedipal phase. He already understood that development has a much longer reach than childhood.

Harvey already appreciated the impact of adult onset and intergenerational transmission of trauma, and this is no place more evident than in his work on the Holocaust.

It's almost obscene to mention so few in this admirable body of work, but that will have to do for today.
