Reports and Brief Communications

Heimo Salminen and Monica Andersson

The need for mutual cooperation and exchange of information among the member societies of the International Federation of Psychoanalytical Societies (IFPS) has increased continually. Our Newsletter serves some of these needs but cannot satisfy them all.

Constant exchange of information is especially important in IFPS because we are a federation. All member societies have been able to develop their own activities and characteristics without centralized, authoritative leadership. Societies in various countries can emphasize their national features and develop their organization according to local needs.

As a result IFPS comprises a rich variety of psychoanalytic cultures and educational systems. Various ways to evaluate the effectiveness of the training of analysts and the results of psychoanalytic treatment have been evolved.

All of this is the logical consequence of the leading principles of IFPS:

—The IFPS is committed to the concept of pluralism in psychoanalytic theory and practice.

—Complete organizational and scientific autonomy as well as equal attending of all Member Societies are essential preconditions for the act of federation.

Our new scientific journal—The International Forum of Psychoanalysis—will open new opportunities in the mutual cooperation and exchange between the member societies of IFPS.

This section of our journal will publish news about conferences, meetings, lectures, educational research and other similar activities of our member societies.
