The papers in this volume represent a variety of approaches to the task of giving current psychoanalytic practice the institutional and intellectual framework necessary to place it within the ranks of a modern profession. To reflect on these contributions I think it may first be useful to see them in the wider context of the changing relation between professions and society, particularly the medical professions.
