Stuart W. Twemlow, M.D.

As we enter our eleventh year of publication we would like to thank all of you for supporting our journal and contributing ideas. Interest in the field of applied or inter-disciplinary psychoanalysis has increased as the American Psychoanalytic Association has considerably broadened its take on what psychoanalysis can do to bolster its fading image in the public domain. The newer analysts who have adopted leadership roles have pushed the idea of education and work in schools as a major new forum for psychoanalysis, together with psychotherapy research and work with soldiers and their families involved in the various world theaters of war. The role for analysts in these options has been present for the past 50 years, but adopted by few analysts. A number of analysts, while they may make a living from clinical psychoanalysis have a significant interest in social, cultural and other applied areas. Similarly the International Psychoanalytic Association as well as the American Psychoanalytic Association are streamlining educational and certification procedures to help psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy to coexist with mutual respect, and to help create a new training process that makes psychoanalytic training possible for the eclectically trained psychotherapists who have other things to do with their time. This all sounds hopeful, but we hope that it is not too late. Community psychoanalysis has maintained a steady progress with major teaching seminars recently in Chicago, Illinois, and planned for Los Angeles, California, and Washington, DC.
