J. C. F.

The writer of this paper, who has elsewhere made a striking contribution to the study of wit, a contribution which, as he himself reminds us, 'fits well enough into Freud's theory of tendency wit', here makes some interesting (and, as it seems to the present reviewer, important) criticisms of Freud's theory of 'harmless' wit. He thinks that this latter form of wit can be reduced to 'tendency' wit; the only difference between the two kinds being that the nature and direction of the 'tendency' is more clearly manifested in so-called 'tendency' wit than in 'harmless' wit. He maintains further that, granting the technique of wit to depend on economy of psychic expenditure, there is no reason to consider that such economy gives rise to pleasure, and that, as a matter of fact, wit causes an increase rather than a decrease in expenditure of energy. This short paper is worth careful consideration, especially as regards its main thesis—the reduction of all wit to the 'tendency' variety.
