Review by:
E. Stengel

This book is a collection of essays on problems of clinical psychiatry. They deal with the following subjects; classification and the concept of illness in psychiatry; psychopathic personalities; abnormal mental reactions; psychoses in mental defectives; organic psychoses; mental symptoms and psychiatric diagnosis; psychopathology of emotions and instincts. Professor Schneider has much to say on these subjects, on a descriptive level, that is sound and interesting. Psychodynamics have always been outside his province. As a book on psychopathology this is exceptional in that it does not even attempt a critical appraisal of the psycho-analytic contribution.
