Psychological Reflections: An Anthology of the Writings of C. G. Jung. Selected and edited by Jolande Jacobi. (London: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1953. Pp. xxvii + 342. 30 s.)

Review by:
W. Ronald D. Fairbairn

This volume consists of a careful selection of some of the more pregnant passages in Jung's numerous works, and will thus appeal to such as find many of his writings tiresome to read owing to the unsystematic nature of his thought. The selected passages are more concerned with his conclusions than with the arguments upon which these are based; and they present a very good picture of his general point of view, philosophical no less than psychological. The selections are arranged in sections under comprehensive headings such as 'Consciousness and the Unconscious' and 'Doctor and Patient'. The sections are of unequal value; and some are full of what appear to be arbitrary pronouncements—the prevailing atmosphere being rather that of the master instructing his pupils. That some of these pronouncements contain much wisdom is not to be gainsaid; and many provide a challenge to thought. Doubtless readers who hold the view that Jung's influence chiefly resides in his personality will be confirmed in their opinion. Be that as it may, all will agree that Jolandi Jacobi has performed a most efficient editorial task.
