Psychological Testing: By Anne Anastasi. (New York: The Macmillan Company, 1954. Pp. 682. $6.75.)

Review by:
Joseph Sandler

New psychological tests are being produced almost daily, and Professor Anastasi has written a most readable account of the various tests in current use. The varieties considered include intelligence tests, aptitude and achievement tests, and instruments designed to measure personality. In particular, the author has stressed the theoretical principles underlying the tests, and includes references to useful sources of information.

The stress of this book is laid entirely on the tests as such, and there is no discussion of the tester—surely as important a variable as the tests themselves? This work was, as Anastasi herself points out, 'evolved in the classroom', and precisely because of this may present a rather idealized picture of the whole subject. One may gain the impression that psychological tests are, in general, as effective as biochemical tests used in medical work. In the field of personality at least, this is far from true.

The psycho-analyst who is interested in getting an academic bird's-eye view of psychological tests would be well advised to read this book.
