Schizophrenia: An Integrated Approach: Edited by Alfred Auerbach. (New York: The Ronald Press, 1959. Pp. 224. $5.50.)

Review by:
R. D. Laing

This book is a symposium based on papers presented at the 1958 Hawaiian Divisional Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. It succeeds in giving a fair representative sample of the best current work on schizophrenia in the United States. The reader who wishes to taste the different approaches can be recommended to this book, which contains, also, adequate bibliographies of its various areas.

The contributors happily avoid sterile controversy and get on with the positive exposition of their own approaches. An overall view indicates, however, that 'integration' is far from achieved. The reader will find openly divergent opinions and more implicit dissonances.

This is, however, an honest reflection of the present state of affairs, and although the atmosphere is much less confusedly acrimonious than it was ten years ago, the reader will still have to make, as best he can, his own synthesis.
