The subject of this paper is defined as a question, 'What inferences, if any, could be drawn from

systematic differences in free associating to dreams as compared to other material?' The difficulties which a young woman had in free associating to dream material are presented. The process which led to their gradual disappearance is discussed and the history of free associations in analysis is traced to emphasize current viewpoints. It is concluded that the patient's difficulties in associating to dreams represent a specific pattern of ego defence against loss of control in a setting of distrust. The feasibility of searching for other characterological patterns in dealing defensively with dream material is discussed.
