Psyche, 24, Nos. 1–6, 1970: PIET C. KUIPER (Wilhelmina Gasthuis, 1 Helversstr., Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Die Ferien des Analytikers (The analyst's vacations)

The interruption of treatment necessitated by the analyst's vacation is ordinarily experienced by patients as a grave hurt. Typical patient reactions are described: the inability to synchronize their own vacations with the analyst's; depressive and rage reactions; the tendency to pass on to others the hurt experienced by 'being sent away'; self-punitive tendencies which are reactions to unconscious vengeance and death wishes toward the analyst; fantasies concerning the analyst's erotic travel adventures, etc. The type of acting out in response to the analyst's vacation frequently provides insight into the basic neurotic conflict.
