Selected Papers of Edmund Bergler, M.D., 1933–1961: New York: Grune & Stratton. 1969. Pp. 981.

The Edmund and Marianne Bergler Psychiatric Foundation has sponsored this selection of 79 papers from some 300 articles published by Dr Bergler in diverse journals over 30 years. These papers give the reader a very comprehensive view of what the preface describes as 'the Berglerian tradition'. One of the chief contributions of Dr Bergler was his emphasis on psychic masochism and the role of guilt in both the genesis of neurotic illnesses and their resistance to cure. Dr Bergler covers a very vast range of subjects and illnesses with a hearty know-all, which some of his colleagues may find a little disconcerting. The book has also a complete bibliography of the published works of Dr Bergler.
