Psychotherapy and Existentialism: Selected Papers on Logotherapy: By Viktor E. Frankl. London: Souvenir Press. 1970. Pp. 242.

This volume is a selection of papers by Professor Frankl of Vienna University, reporting his theories and clinical work on logotherapy. The basic emphasis, like most existentialist thinking, is centred on the problem of the wholeness of being, the quest of purpose, and the meaning of suffering in human existence. Professor Frankl's clinical approach to handling suffering is perhaps best exemplified by his remarks to an 80-year-old female patient called Anastasia Kotek, in an open clinical conference in front of students, who was dying of incurable cancer: 'But cannot suffering sometimes also be a challenge? Is it not conceivable that God wanted to see how Anastasia Kotek will bear it? And perhaps He had to admit: "Yes, she did so very bravely." And now tell me: Can anyone remove such an achievement and accomplishment from the world, Frau Kotek?' The patient evidently had found peace from Professor Frankl's words, and had died shortly afterwards uttering as her last words: 'My life is a monument. So Professor Frankl said to the whole audience, to all the students in the lecture hall. My life was not in vain.
