Tom Hayley

In the 1987 Volume of the Review we publish the first part of Riccardo Steiner's paper, 'A worldwide international trademark of genuineness?' (p. 33) concerning the translation of Freud's works into English in Strachey's Standard Edition.

We also invite psychoanalytical papers on warfare in general and nuclear arms in particular. I am indebted to Dr Paul Harmat of Austria for a paper entitled 'Zsófia Dénes on Freud' (which I hope we will be able to publish in Part 2 of the 1987 Review) for the following quotation from an interview with Freud in July 1918 by Zsófia Dénes (who was 100 years old on 11 January 1985). The interview was published in the 4th of August issue of the daily Vilag (world). Freud concluded his answer to a question by Zsófia Dénes with a pronouncement on the war which was drawing to its close:

'You ask if the general spread and educational influence of psychoanalysis—given that it makes people become honest with themselves as it leads them to become conscious of their instincts and thereby allows them to struggle against those primitive instincts—could at some date prevent war. Look, psychoanalysis is so much the province of exceptional people, the science of a few, of an intellectual aristocracy, that perhaps for the time being it is not really necessary for it to become widespread. But there will come the time when it will be of general significance in terms of its influence on institutions.
