H. A. Rosenfeld (1910–1986)

Hanna Segal and Riccardo Steiner

On 29 November 1986 Dr H. A. Rosenfeld died in London after a short illness. He was 76 and leaves a widow, Lottie, two daughters, a son and several grandchildren.

Dr Rosenfeld was born in Nuremberg on 2 July 1910. He came from a middle class Jewish family. His parents had three other children—all daughters.

From his early adolescence Dr Rosenfeld was interested in psychology and human sciences. His father wanted him to help with the family business, but all the same he supported him when he chose to study medicine. As was a common practice in Germany at that time, Dr Rosenfeld studied at several German universities, becoming interested in psychiatry especially in Munich, where he graduated in 1934. It is worthwhile remembering that Munich like other German universities, Heidelberg for instance, had been deeply influenced not only by the Kraepelian tradition, but also by Bleuler, where psychiatry was concerned.
