Delusions of Everyday Life. : By Leonard Shengold. New Haven, Connecticut: Yale University Press. 1995. Pp. 221.

Review by:
Eric R. Marcus

Dr Shengold has written a delightful book about the psychodynamics of narcissistic envy in its many forms, including neurotic symptoms, malignant envy, paranoid delusions, being in love, and sexual perversions. He includes an applied analysis of Samuel Butler and his work, using the pathographic approach. The book is an application of psychodynamic knowledge to these various topics. Written in a relaxed and personal style, the book is easy to read and promotes much thought about one's own patient case-load, one's approach to such patients, and one's feelings about such issues both in treatment and in daily life. The book should be used in teaching medical students, residents, as well as early psychoanalytic candidates because it is filled with understandable clinical and everyday life examples. There is a dearth of such teaching materials.
