Review by:
Giovanna Regazzoni Goretti

According to Speziale Bagliacca—a training analyst at the Italian Psychoanalytical Society and author of On Freud's Shoulders and other works—helping the patient to manage the sense of guilt is a sine qua non of every psychoanalytic treatment intended to cure. Yes, cure. In the face of all the cultural and pseudo-cultural fashions that assign different aims to psychoanalysis, Speziale Bagliacca has the courage to use the word ‘cure’, which he defines as a

clear and stable diminution of suffering, accompanied by an increased capacity to contain it, with all the relevant implications in terms of disappearance of symptoms, control of the compulsion to act in accordance with rigid, fixed patterns, as well as the capacity to think (p. 32).
