Letters to the Editors

On: The Donald Woods Winnicott Archives — Preliminary Announcement from the Winnicott Trust Related Papers

George Makari, M.D.

Dear Editors,

In the most recent issue of International Journal of Psychoanalysis (volume 89, issue 2), I was pleased to read that ‘The Donald Woods Winnicott Archives’ are shortly to be established by the Winnicott Trust as part of the Wellcome Library.

I applaud the Trust for opening this archive, however, I fear that this notice may be misleading. It suggests that the Wellcome is soon to be the primary or even single resource for archival materials on Dr Winnicott, and this is not the case.

A great portion of Dr Winnicott's professional papers have been and continue to be held at the Oskar Diethlem Library of the Institute for the History of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. Transferred by Clare Winnicott to the Library in 1981, these papers span the years of 1957 to 1971. Therefore, in the interests of scholarship, I thought it my duty to remind your readers of the excellent archival collection on Dr Winnicott which has long had its residence in New York.
