Attualità del transfert [The Transference Today] edited by Anna Maria Nicolò Franco Angeli, Milan, 2007; 347 pp; €35

Review by:
Stefano Bolognini

Interest in Italian psychoanalysis, which has been very keen in the international community in the last few years, will be still further enhanced by this most stimulating of books, which records the scientific contributions accruing from a year of work by the Centro di Psicoanalisi Romano [Rome Psychoanalysis Centre], as well as those of its prestigious foreign guests during the same year, all devoted to the central subject of the transference.

The result is an exciting and in no way academic monograph that offers a highly characteristic overall view of Italian psychoanalysis. After all, as Vincenzo Bonaminio explains in his foreword, the Centro di Psicoanalisi Romano has a specific tradition of attention to the clinical dimension and to the nature of the analyst-analysand relationship, while typifying through its style of elaboration the contemporary Italian dialectic between internal debate and exchanges with the international community—all this pursued in an open and fertile manner to remarkably original effect.

Indeed this book bears witness to the fact that present-day Italian psycho-analysis is neither self-referential and ‘claustral’ (a risk sometimes run by other national schools, even those with a hallowed tradition), nor simply ‘imported’, for the numerous publications and the congresses to which many of the best foreign authors are invited subsequently undergo in-depth creative elaboration by the local scientific community, with particularly original results.
