Psychoanalysis in the University: The Clinical Dimension

Dana Birksted-Breen and Robert Michels

A symposium on ‘Psychoanalysis in the University: The Clinical Dimension’ was held at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia on 12 and 13 November 2007. It was co-sponsored by Emory, the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Psychoanalytic Association. The following five papers are from the conference. The first two are introductory talks by non-analyst academics. James Wagner, an engineer who is President of Emory, compares psychoanalysis to engineering in terms of the struggle to be accepted as an academic discipline. Sander Gilman, Director of Emory's Program in Psychoanalytic Studies, traces the history of the relationship between psychoanalysis and the university. There follow three papers by psychoanalysts that were presented at the Conference.

The International Journal of Psychoanalysis welcomes submission of papers that respond to the issues raised in this symposium, or that propose alternative views.
