A year into the establishment of the new Editorial Board, the International Journal welcomes the opportunity to look back at developments over the last year and forward to new possibilities, as well as reflect on the defining values and outlook of the Journal.

A core concern of the International Journal is the creative space between tradition and change, where development stems from psychoanalytic foundations in a dialectical movement of returning to the past and looking forward. Probing the limits of psychoanalysis, as editor I try to stay attentive to the questions - what is the psychoanalytical? Where are its parameters? When does it become so changed that it is no longer psychoanalysis? These are not simple questions and need constant discussion if our profession is to retain its solid foundation, providing a frame for creativity. Innovation emerges from previously established parameters and resides in specific, sometimes subtle, shifts in thought. Speaking of the developments that take place in the consulting room, but also in theoretical thought, Jean Laplanche identifies a dialectic between “centering” and “recentering” (Laplanche, 1999, pp. 2, 67), where critique remains internal to the economy of Freudian thought and metapsychological concepts, but also other to it, revising rather than rejecting the past.
